Lucknow
Sprawling on the banks of the river Gomti, the historic city
of Lucknow is famous for its rich culture and warm
hospitality. Legend has it that the city was gifted by Lord
Rama to his brother Lakshmana after his conquest of Lanka.
The city was originally called Lakshmanpur but with the
passage of time the name was changed to Lucknow.
|
Lucknow is an amalgamation of culture, art, cuisine,
music and technology. The Nawabs of Awadh took
particular pride and pleasure in constructing several
buildings of architectural glory which still speak of
the lavish lifestyle and the rich cultural heritage of a
by gone era. The Bara Imambara, built by Nawab Asaf-Ud-
Daulah is famous for its maze of labyrinths, known as
the Bhool Bhulaiya. Close by, is the majestic Rumi
Darwaza, also called the Turkish Gate which was built by
Nawab Asaf-Ud-Daulah in 1784 A.D. during the Great
famine. To its west, is the Chhota Imambara built by
Nawab Mohd. Ali Shah.
Other places of interest in Lucknow include the Residency, Kaiserbagh Baradari, Botanical Garden,
Chhatar Manzil and Bhatkhande Music College.
|
|
 |
|
The city is
also famous for its Mughlai cuisine, Chikan and Zardozi
embroidery, brass, Bidri stone and wood carvings.
Important academic institutes situated in Lucknow are
Central Drug Research Institute, Industrial Toxicology
Research Centre, Central Institute of Medicinal and
Aromatic Plants, Indian Institute of Management, and
Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical
Sciences. The holy cities of Ayodhya, Kashi, Allahabad (Prayagraj),
Mathura, the Taj Mahal at Agra, the hill stations of
Nainital and Mussourie and the wild life sanctuaries at
Jim Corbett Park and Dudhwa National Park are well
connected and easily accessible from Lucknow. |
 |
